Dr. Ging Sii has taught Academic English in universities in Malaysia, New Zealand and the UK. Her areas of research interest are Genre Analysis, English for Academic Purposes and Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language.

演讲内容简介：This lecture is based on a small research project Dr. Ging Sii conducted in the UK and a paper she published in a refereed international journal. In this lecture, she will look at British and Chinese personal statements for postgraduate admission to universities in the UK. Despite the fact that a winning personal statement has become an important part of the university admissions process, there has been little research done on personal statements written for entrance to postgraduate studies. Sixteen personal statements (eight British and eight Chinese samples enclosed in the Application for Postgraduate Admission forms) were analysed in terms of moves used for communicative purposes. The results indicated differences in the moves and cultural elements used by each group which might be attributable to cultural variations.
